What Game of Thrones Can Teach Us About SEO

I don’t know why its taken be so long to think about writing this, but it only occurred that there are lessons that we can all learn about digital marketing from the HBO epic Game of Thrones. (Also I just love Game of Thrones and wanted to write about it)

White Walkers

First off, the dreaded white walkers, “with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars”, these are like bad, spammy, low quality links. We like to forget about these and pretend they don’t exist, until they turn up out the blue and try and kill us. Like white walkers they can be destroyed but it’s a lot easier to kill a bad link than a White Walker, as you don’t need dragon glass, Valyrian steel or fire. Although fire would work, its not recommended.

Bran Stark

The son of Ned Stark, Bran was famously pushed from a tower by Jamie Lannister, and left for dead after he caught him with his sister (gross). Overcoming all the odds Bran survived and continues to fight back, his crippling injury. This is like a penalised website, although it might seem like all hope is lost you can recover and come back bigger and strong than before (but you wont become a warg).

Starks vs Lannisters

Before the later seasons (and all the other families come in) there were two main families, the Starks and the Lannisters. The Starks were honourable and loyal, while the Lannister a selfish, boastful and only care about self-preservation. In terms of SEO this is like the two approaches, white hat and black hat. The Stark approach, honest, best practise and follows Googles Webmaster Guidelines. While you have the Lannister approach of bad practise, black hat and paid links. What house do you want to be ?

The Sparrow

The sparrows are some creepy religious cult, who have recently come to power and prominence and are pretty much smashing it up. The Sparrows are lead by their high sparrow and going around Kings Landing punishing anyone who is doing anything wrong. Does this sound like Google and their High Sparrow Matt Cutts to you? With the Sparrows you only need to worry if you have done anything wrong but if you haven’t you’re fine.

Dragons

Finally we have Dragons, once thought to be extinct, they have been brought back by Daenerys Targaryen the mothers of dragons. This is probably the most valuable lesson Game of Thrones can teach us, if you have dragons you can do what ever you like, because you have dragons and dragons beat everything.
