HTML Hypertext Markup Language

HTML or Hypertext Markup Language is the language that is used for creating the structure of webpages. HTML tags are the building blocks, which form the structure of the majority of Internet pages. HTML is one part of the trio of components, which make up the core of the World Wide Web, the other two being CSS (or, Cascading Style Sheets) and JavaScript.

What is HTML?

Essentially, HTML provides a standardised system for displaying webpages on Internet browsers. HTML is coded using tags which are opened with a less than symbol (<) and closed with a greater than sign (>). They contain text inside which specifies the attributes of a particular HTML element. The text that the developer wishes to display on the webpage is then typed and the element is closed with another tag, which features a forward slash at the beginning. Different tags can make text appear in different ways. For example, a tag could be used to make text appear bold or an

tag could be used to make text a heading. HTML can be written in a simple text editor and saved as a .html file.

HTML 5

In 2014 the World Wide Web Consortium (WC3) published HTML 5. Its aim was to bring the web structuring language in line with new media formats and technologies on the Internet. The new version of HTML includes several new tags, which can be used to point to rich media formats. New tags include   and  .   New page structure elements have also been included in the latest version, which allows developers to engage in more complex page formatting practises. Whilst the new version of HTML adds a great deal more functionality, it is not quite in line with the media capabilities of Adobe Flash Player. For more interactive features, JavaScript must be used alongside HTML.
