From late March to early April, I spent 4 days completing my year 10 work experience at Reflect Digital. When I stood outside on my first day, I found myself nervous and questioning whether I was ready for a week of work in an office. However, the second I stepped through that door, I was greeted with friendly faces and warm smiles; I felt welcomed immediately. My days were planned out and structured in detail so I had no need to stress about what was going to happen next. I was informed on plans, rules and the structure of the office immediately. Here's my experience of working at a Digital Marketing brand
I spent Monday working with the SEO team. The morning focused on teaching me about the basics of working in SEO, and it was explained clearly and thoroughly. I was assigned a task based on developing and improving pre-existing meta titles and meta descriptions. If needed, I was able to ask for help from any member of the team, and they were extremely easy to talk to. I spent my afternoon planning and structuring a blog about “the best things to do in Munich”. I found this task very interesting and felt that it honed in on my skills very well. With any task I was given, I was provided with helpful feedback, which was shared with the intent of helping me progress and improve what I'd already written as opposed to primarily telling me I did things wrong.
On Tuesday, I helped with work in marketing. Working in marketing was what I was most looking forward to when coming to Reflect Digital. I really enjoyed both learning about and actually participating in marketing. I spent the morning organising leaflets and leftover merchandise following an Aspiration Digital event. During this activity, I was given more of an opportunity to talk to staff here about what Aspiration Digital and Reflect Digital are like to work at. As well as this, in the afternoon I was tasked with packing “Brunch Boxes” for a webinar that's done at Reflect Digital. I really enjoyed these types of activities as it helped me to start to picture what sort of tasks someone working in marketing would do on a day-to-day basis.
I started my Wednesday back with SEO. My first task was based on Redirect Mapping. This involves finding locations on websites to redirect error pages (404s) to. Personally, I found this task really enjoyable and easy to wrap my head around. All applications and systems that I hadn't heard of before were explained to me clearly, so I knew how to utilise them properly. Following this, I did an activity on Content Localisation and the use of Schema. I found the whole morning really engaging and interesting as it provided me with knowledge on things I’d never been introduced to before. In the afternoon, I did research for an upcoming Aspiration Digital event based in Leicester. I researched schools and local tech companies to help the AD team know where to look for people interested in both attending as students and as companies.
Despite completing my last day of work experience from home due to sickness, the team at Reflect Digital catered to this very well. I did all meetings on a Google Meet and was still able to complete all my tasks throughout the day. In the morning, working with the Paid Media team, I worked with Meta Ads and created Headings and primary text for them. I found this interesting as I was able to use my own ideas to make something more creative. I also spent time looking at other companies' examples of advertising. As I haven't done much like this before, I found seeing how adverts work really fascinating. In the afternoon, I looked at Search Term Reports. Personally, I really liked learning how adverts are pushed out to audiences and how to narrow down who sees what.
Based on my experience alone, I would thoroughly recommend looking for work experience within Reflect Digital. An office environment may seem uncomfortable and scary at first, but I guarantee you, with a team as nice as the one at Reflect Digital, you are bound to feel at home straight away. Even if you're unsure about where you may want to go in the future, you learn so many versatile skills here that could apply to many jobs in and out of the digital marketing world.
