As a Digital Marketing & Analytics Master’s student, I was eager to learn how the theories I learn at university are applied in a real world agency environment. When joining Reflect Digital, I was particularly interested in learning more about paid media and behavioural science, which, if I’m honest, was an area of marketing I didn’t even know existed before I arrived.
I expected to learn about campaigns, marketing platforms, and client work, but what surprised me the most was how much human behaviour influences every aspect of marketing. Through shadowing industry experts in SEO, Paid Media, Growth, and Behavioural Science, I quickly realised that successful marketing is about more than just reaching an audience - it’s about understanding what motivates people to take action.
One of the highlights of my placement was spending time with Reflect Digital’s Human Behaviour team. Before joining Reflect I always viewed marketing as understanding a target audience and creating content that appealed to them. However, I hadn’t considered the science behind why people make decisions and how small changes can influence behaviour.
I was introduced to behavioural nudges and how they can be used across different aspects of digital marketing to encourage desired actions without restricting choice. As part of this session, I completed a task using the RSPCA as an example client. I was prompted to develop campaign ideas based off of certain behavioural nudges such as social proof, loss aversion, reciprocity bias, and chunking.
What I found interesting was how these concepts could be applied in so many different ways, from donation campaigns to social media and advertising. It made me realise that successful marketing isn’t just about what you say, but how you present information and the emotions you encourage people to feel.
As I moved between departments, I quickly noticed that behavioural science wasn’t limited to one team. Instead, it appeared throughout almost every area of marketing.
While shadowing the Paid Media team, I learned about Meta Ads, audience targeting, and ad copywriting. Something that stood out to me was the importance of testing. Rather than changing multiple elements at once, marketers test one variable at a time to understand what is influencing performance. This approach helps remove assumptions and focus on actual user behaviour.
I also Spent time with the SEO team, where I worked on optimising a real client page. Before this experience, I mainly associated SEO with keywords and rankings. However, I learned that SEO is equally focused on user experience, ensuring content matches search intent and helps users find relevant information as quickly as possible.
Another task I took was to audit the social media channels for ‘Aspiration Digital’. This involved analysing competitors, identifying audience preferences, and recommending improvements to increase engagement. Through this project I saw how understanding audience motivations and content consumption habits is essential when developing an effective social media strategy.
Alongside learning new marketing skills, the placement has also given me a much clearer understanding of how a digital marketing agency operates.
One thing that stood out was how closely different departments work together. Although each team specialises in a different area, they all contribute towards the same client objectives. Whether that’s through SEO, social media, events or behavioural science, every team plays an essential role in helping the campaigns perform effectively.
My time here has also helped me understand the difference between learning marketing in a classroom and seeing it applied in practice. Working on real client tasks, attending meetings, and observing client discussions has given me valuable insight into how marketing discussions are made on a daily basis.
Most importantly, this experience has given me the confidence to explore different career paths within digital marketing. While I’m still deciding which area of marketing I wish to pursue, I now have a much better understanding of the opportunities available and the skills required for different roles.
