The travel search landscape looks very different in 2026. According to the 2026 Travel Booking Engines Industry Report by Salience Search Marketing, overall organic visibility for the top 100 UK travel booking brands fell by 19% year-on-year, while specialist operators like Hays Travel and Trailfinders saw their organic visits jump by up to 35%.

Concurrently, data from enterprise SEO platform BrightEdge’s February 2026 Generative Parser tracking indicates that Google’s AI Overviews (AIOs) now appear on roughly 48% to 50% of all US and UK search queries. A major longitudinal search behaviour study by Seer Interactive tracking 5.47 million queries found that organic click-through rates drop by as much as 61% (from 1.76% to 0.61%) when an AI Overview is present.

The key takeaway? Chasing broad, generic search volume is a losing battle. Search volume is often a vanity metric, particularly if the user's intent doesn't match your commercial offering. To drive real revenue, travel brands must pivot to capturing highly specific queries and structuring their content for the AI-driven search engine results page (SERP).

Digital Marketing for Travel Needs to Shift from Click Volume to Click Quality

Traffic isn't gone; it is reallocated. While AI Overviews reduce top-of-funnel clicks, the clicks you do earn are significantly more valuable.

When a user reads an AI summary and still clicks through to a brand's site, their intent has been qualified further up the funnel. They are spending more time on site and converting at higher rates. The new goal is to be the specialised source that users click when they are past the research phase and ready to book.

Finding the Right Angle for Your Travel Content Marketing

The key to capturing the right intent for your content is to move away from generic terms and focus on the why and who. This means shifting the focus of your SEO for travel towards the human motivations and behaviours that make a piece truly engaging.

To put this into perspective, look at the difference between volume-led targeting and intent-led targeting:

  • The Old Way (Volume-led): "Holidays in Devon" (Huge search volume, but extremely low conversion rate because the keyword is too broad and fails to qualify the intent of the searcher).

  • The New Way (Intent-led): "Best toddler-friendly resorts in Devon with enclosed gardens" (Lower search volume, but highly commercial intent leading directly to bookings).

Here’s what this looks like in practice.

Building Behaviour-Led Trip Personas

To capture these high-intent searches, you need to build specific traveller profiles based on psychological drivers rather than just demographics. Our latest Q3 SearchPulse data for the travel sector confirms that 49% of 25–34s use YouTube vlogs for validation, whereas 18–24s index higher on TikTok/Instagram for set-jetting and avoiding viral spots (17%), which means knowing your audience and creating personas is important. As an example, our behavioural team might highlight the following personas.

The Anxious Planner (Driver: Loss Aversion): Driven by the fear of a ruined trip or wasted money, they search for reassurance and logistics.

  • Keywords: "Is it safe to travel to Costa Rica in September", "What to pack for a Kenya safari to avoid tsetse flies".

The Status Seeker (Driver: Social Proof & Exclusivity): Driven by the desire for unique, premium experiences that elevate their social standing.

  • Keywords: "Private pool villas Santorini no kids", "Hidden gem Michelin star restaurants Amalfi coast".

The Value Maximiser (Driver: Resource Scarcity): Driven not just by finding the absolute cheapest option, but by getting the highest perceived value for their budget.

  • Keywords: "All-inclusive family resorts Algarve with free waterpark access", "Cheapest month to fly to Tokyo from London".

Create a keyword intent map

Once you know who which persona or personas you are targeting, you must map when they are searching. Filter your keywords into specific buckets that relate to the exact stage of a user's journey:

  • Dreaming (Top-Funnel): Seeking inspiration. (e.g., "Where is it hot in October?")

  • Planning (Mid-Funnel): Narrowing down logistics and comparing options. (e.g., "Maldives vs Seychelles for honeymoon")

  • Booking (Bottom-Funnel): Ready to convert and purchase. (e.g., "Seychelles honeymoon packages with private pool")

The key is to target your content to a specific section of the funnel. It is worth noting that in modern SERPs, many top-funnel, informational queries are now answered directly by AI Overviews. This means top-funnel content needs to be designed very differently from content further down the funnel to remain competitive.

Leverage Social Listening

Once you’ve created the personas and funnel stages, we need to understand the real-world queries being used. By digging into data in Google Search Console, People Also Ask (PAA) and platforms like Reddit, we can begin to understand the highly specific questions and pain points travellers encounter before they book. This additional insight gives real data that helps you connect and understand your users. Reddit in particular often provides raw, unfiltered opinions and emotional insight, often revealing questions people felt unable to ask a travel agent.

Distance Being Travelled Affects Search

It makes sense that the distance being travelled has an effect on the financial investment required to make a trip, but less obvious is the impact it has on searching and planning.

"Answer-First" Architecture To Capture AI Overviews in the Travel Niche

To be cited as a source by AI Overviews and capture value in a zero-click SERP, the structure of your content must evolve.

  • Answer-First Structure: AI doesn't want to crawl through a long and rambling introduction. Travel content must directly answer the core query in the first 100-150 words.

  • Use a clear heading structure using H1 - H6 headings that match common query variations.

  • Simplify data and rely on HTML tables to compare data (like pricing or weather), as AI models parse these formats more easily than graphics, diagrams, and figures.

  • Inject Un-Generatable Experience: AI can easily summarise average temperatures and list top monuments. It cannot generate firsthand human experience. To stand out, inject real, hard-to-fake expertise into your content like realistic travel times between locations, specific neighbourhood nuances, and staff recommendations.

With AI Overviews directly answering mid-funnel queries, they have a direct effect on the amount of traffic being generated to a given website from these types of queries. The value of AI Overviews however, shouldn’t be discounted, as they generate thousands of brand awareness impressions and build up brand trust. Couple this with the fact that traffic that is generated from AIOs is often significantly more valuable, and you can see why capturing AIOs is an essential and valuable brand strategy.

George Shuttlewood, CMO at Global Touring, shared his view on search behaviours in our latest SearchPulse report:

"AI discovery rewards specificity, allowing niche operators to surface where they cannot outspend on broad generic terms."

From Traffic to Tickets: Maximising Conversions

To maximise search exposure in this new era of travel search, build topical authority using a hub-and-spoke content strategy. Create a comprehensive pillar page (e.g., "The Ultimate Guide to Safari in Kenya") supported by hyper-specific cluster blogs answering niche questions.

To bridge the gap between inspiration and action, your content must integrate seamlessly with your site's UX. Embed contextual booking widgets directly into informational blog posts, display clear pricing indicators, and use highly visible calls-to-action (CTAs) that dynamically match what the user is reading.

The 8-Step Travel Intent Content Workflow

Understanding the new world of travel search is one thing; knowing where to start on your own site is another.

The following comprehensive checklist is designed to help you audit your existing content and build out a high-converting, AI-friendly travel strategy:

Phase 1: Audience & Intent Mapping

  • Define Core Trip Personas: Move beyond demographics. Define your target customers by their psychological drivers (e.g., Loss Aversion, Status Seeking) and map their specific travel pain points.

  • Mine Social Listening Data: Supplement your keyword and query research with data from Reddit, Google's “People Also Ask”, Quora, and Answer The Public to uncover unfiltered questions your users are asking.

  • Create a Funnel Intent Map: Categorise your target keywords into Dreaming (Top-Funnel), Planning (Mid-Funnel), and Booking (Bottom-Funnel) stages. Ensure your content calendar addresses all three.

Phase 2: Content & Architecture Creation

  • Build Answer First Introductions: Audit your top 10 highest informational pages. Rewrite the first 100-150 words to provide a direct, concise answer to the core query to increase the chances of an AI Overview citation.

  • Create Un-generatable Experience based content (EEAT): Review your existing content to ensure it contains firsthand experiences and user-generated content, that AI can’t simply generate. Adding items like realistic point-to-point travel times, recommendations or local neighbourhood nuances is a great way to generate unique and trusted content.

  • Format Content for Machine Readability: Implement clear H2/H3 structures, use bulleted lists for itineraries, and deploy HTML tables for comparative data (like weather, pricing, or distance), which AI models parse easily.

Elevate Your Travel SEO with Human-Centric Strategy

In a search landscape where AI can instantly source and generate average temperatures, best lists, and generic itineraries, your travel brand must be able to deliver what machines cannot i.e., specific, human experience reinforced with social proof.

Winning at travel SEO is no longer about shouting the loudest for the broadest keywords; it is about speaking directly to the behavioural drivers of your ideal customer at the exact moment they are ready to book.

As organic visibility for generic terms continues to shrink, the brands that thrive will be those that align their content with true search intent, guiding travellers seamlessly from the dreaming phase all the way to checkout.

At Reflect Digital, our travel SEO services are built on a deep understanding of human behaviour. We don’t just chase search volume; we uncover the psychological drivers behind how your customers search, plan, and purchase.
