A directory website that is simple to use, fast and efficient
Expert Witness provide open and easy access for the legal and media professions to experts in all of the disciplines for which they may need expert advice or guidance.
To design and build a new website and client administration area. The new website was to be modernised with better content management tools and improved search functionality.
The administrative area was to be made clearer for the user to login and update information as well as making the master admin section a much more streamlined process.
The site has a large amount of advert space, the challenge was to ensure that users would see the most appropriate adverts when using the website so that the user would be getting the most tailored experience, ensuring the relevant experts can get the best exposure.
Following a project kick off meeting it was key that we got the specification right before starting to work on any designs. Many of the objectives were based on usability based on the old website not being very user friendly, therefore we had to ensure all functionality was clearly specified and agreed before launching into the design phase.
Based on the needs of the project it was decided that Scoop, our CMS, would be the right platform as ease of use and security were key.
Simple navigation for both front end users and members was extremely important and ensuring that adverts could be tagged to the different areas of the website. The search needed to be the most prominent feature on the website, as this is the main reason most users will be visiting the website. The search needed to be simple to use and the results pages informative and easy to manage. The old website was limited with regards to call to actions, therefore we made sure the website was full of ways to get in contact and to find out more information.
The advertising module is extremely important to the functions of the website and ensuring the ads can be tagged appropriately to show in relevant sections of the website. For the users we had to ensure the management area of the website was as simple as possible to ensure training was not required. Email notifications are triggered when someone views an expert’s profile.
As with any website we build page speed was extremely important – we were able to achieve 1.33 second page load, with performance grade B based on Pingdom’s speed test tool and a 90/100 from Google Page Speed Insights.
With any large site migration, we had to consider the search engine and UX impact of moving from the old site to the new one. The website has over 1,800 indexed pages so we had to ensure all were mapped and redirected correctly to their new corresponding profile. All users were imported into the new website so they did not have to re-register, all were requested to set a new password as with the new website all passwords are encrypted to offer a necessary layer of security.
There was a smooth transition from the old website to the new and since launch more features have continued to be added. The client and members have all been extremely pleased with the new site and search engine visibility has continued to increase.
